Creating the pencil case we like…Unicorn DIY!

Back to School and the creativity continues from Familives and working mama. Anna Michti from working mama presents an amazing Unicorn pencil case!

We have already passing the first week after the start of the new school year and the children have begun reading. And our first craft of the season is the clay unicorn pencil case!

In the process of reading, the environment in which the child reads plays a very important role! So it would be good to learn early to read in his room and specifically in his office, which should be properly configured to be functional. In the office area one of the necessary accessories that should be there is a pencil case, where the child will place his graphic material in order not to lose pencils and other objects right and left. This year we decided with my little Ioanna, who goes to the 1st Primary School, to make our own handmade clay pencil case. By drawing what else? Our favorite unicorn!

We thought as a basic material for this craft to use the clay from  Fila Hellas. And because we have not worked with Joanna with clay, we chose Das clay, which dries with air within 24 hours and does not need to be baked! It is also odorless and mellow and can be easily used even by a beginner, like me, even a young child!

But let's look at the materials:

  • Das clay in white color
  • Rollin pin Das
  • Acrylic colors Giotto Decor Matt in 12 colors
  • Giotto Brush
  • A tin can of food or coffee that we can find at home
  • Cutter in the design we want

The first step in our construction is to open the clay on a surface to cover the tin can to be used as a mold. The clay, with the help of the professional Das Roller, was very easy to open, smooth and uniform in thickness. This 3-ring roller allows you to choose the thickness of the clay between 2.5mm, 3.5mm and 5mm. In this construction I chose 3.5 mm.

Then we carefully spread the clay sheet over the tin and wrap it around, joining the two edges of the sheet with our fingers and removing what is left. Then I applied in the middle of the round, in order for our unicorn to be slightly engraved, and we also removed whatever protruded from the inside of our mold. We let our construction dry for a 24-hour period, until the surface of the clay became compact and hard.

Then the time for painting came! The favorite part of Joanna. The colors we used were the choice of Joanna, and despite her age she managed to handle perfectly both Giotto Brush brushes and Giotto Decor Matt acrylic paints, which are very covering, odorless, easily washable of the clothes and are mainly safe for children! The exterior part of the clay was painted in blue colors with the sponge style, which created water and the result was certainly more impressive than if we had painted it with a brush!

The section of the unicorn was painted with shades of yellow, pink, fuchsia, purple, blue and ceramic with the help of brushes. Indeed, some shades were used, as they were prepared, while some others used together, for example the pink and the veraman!

Our pencil case is now ready and is already decorating the office of Joanna, while her joy and pride for this construction certainly compensate our effort and our effort!

So, do not hesitate to try to make your own clay pencil case and decorate it with a design of your choice! And be absolutely sure that the pencil case you will make with your child will be so special that it will find its place on your child's office! Good school year!
