Create your own Collage portrait with Giotto!

Today one super craft from Evaggelia Paparizou from forhappymoments.gr and Familives!

Today we will see how we can easily and enteraining a children’s portrait with collage!

According to scientific studies, the age of the child from 0 to 7 years of age is crucial for its subsequent course. The evolution at this stage in mental, emotional, social and kinetic development is the basis for the rest of the child's life. And either at home or at school, art contributes to the balanced and healthy development of preschool children and to the development of their emotional intelligence.

So, wanting to make a collage in the house with my daughter Ioanna I was inspired by the photo below and finally we made her portrait!

Besides, at school all children can create their own portrait and stick it to the wall of their class. So mum and daughter together we made "Ioanna" in collage with products from the company Fila Hellas

The materials we used were the following:

  • glue Giotto Collage
  • glue Giotto Vinilik
  • Giotto Fine Poster Paints in 12 colors
  • Brushes from paints Giotto Brush
  • Water glass for brushes Giotto
  • scissors
  • Α4 paper
  • Paper with patterns

We started by preparing the basic colors we would apply to the face using the Giotto Fine Poster Paint Tempera. In A4 adhesives we painted the basic color of the face with a beige - yellow, together with Ioanna with Giotto Brush brushes, then mixing and a little coffee for the ears, nose and throat, then adding more intense coffee to hair and eyebrows and finally red for the mouth. These paints offer great coverage and are safe for children. Also, every time we wanted to change color, we washed our brushes in the Giotto Brush Washer!

Then on an A4 cardboard I drew the outline of the portrait with a pencil while on the background I designed and cut bubbles.

Then we cut in the stripes the painted pages and then into squares.

* At this point I want to open a parenthesis and say that Ioanna is still too small to be able to cut the scissors well. Of course, learning the scissor cutting is very important as a skill but at the same time very difficult to be conquered by a child under 3 years of age. Also, because cutting the scissors is a delicate mobility, it is good that before starting this activity, it has also been practiced in other thin mobility exercises. But from 4 years of age, cutting with scissors helps the child to strengthen and combine the finger muscles involved in the writing process. It also teaches the child how to use a single hand during the cutting process, gradually leading to the consolidation of the pleating.

So, I gave her the special plastic scissors that are suitable for young children and showed her the way we cut!

After I painted the A4 cardboard with blue gradients for the background, I picked up Giotto Collage Glue and put a little on the palette - a coloring bag to get the amount we would need each time with a brush. For this process, I used an old brush so that we do not destroy the one we used to paint. This glue is transparent, sticky on various surfaces and is safe for use by children.

First, Ioanna stuck the clouds in the background.

Then she started the collage of the basic color for the face. (Again, her age does not help to take care of it for so long with such small collage papers, so I put it 5-6 in each color).

We then tagged the ears, nose, throat and then mouth.

Then we stuck her hair and clips on her hair. In fact, wanting to make our creation less static we let her hair protrude from the background paper!

Also, in order to create her clothes, we used ready-made cardboards with plaid patterns that I cut them into pieces and we stuck them with Giotto Vinilik glue, which is odorless, sticks hard and is safe for children.

At the end I designed her eyes and eyebrows, we stuck them together, and so Ioanna's portrait was finished, which at every stage we arrived was glad to show her to her dad! I can say that we both enjoyed during the whole process of this collage construction!

In our house the portrait of John found his place on the wall of her room, where we have made the tree with the help of which we learn the days and the weather!

We hope you also liked the construction of the child's portrait with collage and inspired to make something similar to your children either in the classroom at school or at home! Good school year!
